Another update. This time we produced a document describing our concept in full detail. It includes the content already shown in the earlier posts on this blog as well as some new content.

Again another update. A powerpoint presentation that takes us through a use case scenario based on the sketches of the storyboard. This powerpoint presentation introduces the concept, the placement, the usage, and a lot of it’s functionalities.

Next step we figured out a storyboard. It will describe the process of using the system. Starting in the airplane with a hand-out informing people about the system, going on to demonstrating the several services available.

We did some interviews and photo’s at schiphol airport about the peoples opinion about the navigation around schiphol airport and finding their way with the public transport. We interviewed tourists as well as employees at schiphol to find out. Here are a few opinions they had about the problems and possible ways for solutions we suggested to them.
Which things do particularly confuse tourists at schiphol:

A tourist from India: “I would particularly take help with the trains?“
A tourist from the US: “I find the maps very confusing.”
A tourist from the UK: “Instructions for tickets would be very usefull.”
A tourist from Dubai: “It's difficult to find out how to get to Amsterdam Central Station, even in english.”

Security personel: “arrival and departure are not clear for people who dont speak english”
Information desk employee: “Not everyone wants information in english.”

We pitched ideas at people for image based instructions for the operation of ticket machines, spoken instruction in multiple different languages through headphones, touch screen operated route planners/information systems and finally a phone based information system that can provide you with information in your own language on your mobile.

A tourist from the UK: “Very usefull on your phone, especially for directions to hotels“
A tourist from India: “Very good idea, would be very handy”
A tourist from Dubai: “Images for instruction is a great idea”

Information desk employee: “Mainly Spanish, Italian and Asian people.”
Information desk employee: “Bluetooth information service on mobile phone is a very good idea.”
Information desk employee: “Great, I think people will appreciate such a service..”

For the second and main part of the public space project we have to make a concept to improve a public space of our own choise. Here I say “we” because it’s a team assignment. I will be doing this project together with my classmate Ruben Vreeken (rubenvreeken.blogspot.com). We basically decided to do this assignment together because we were both planning on making improvements for schiphol airport and we both wanted to get it done at a decent pace without having to wait for many teammates.

Our public space of chose was schiphol airport where we wanted to improve the navigation services for tourists. Specifically aiming at those tourists who understand neither Dutch, nor English, though our concept would have to be usefull for any tourist at the airport also, just to have the system be available to a large public.

The system will need to help people find their way around the airport, but it also helps them plan their route to their hotel, how to get the right train tickets, and it also shows some other information. All this provided in a large variety of languages.

In practice we decided to break it down to the following languages:

• Dutch
• English
• German
• French
• Spanish
• Italian
• Russian
• Japanese
• Chinese
• Korean
• Thai
• Vietnamese

In these languages we will provide the following digital services:

• Schiphol tourguide (an interactive map op schiphol)
• Tourist highlights (a list of touristic attractions in the area of schiphol/Amsterdam)
• Hotel route assistant (an automatic route assistant to the hotel of choise making use of the public transport)
• A map of the Center of Amsterdam.
• Ticket machine assistant (a “how to” guide to operate the train ticket selling machines)
  Find your taxi (a quick guide to the taxi’s at the airport)

We plan to introduce these services in the following ways:

• An information stand with headphones and flatscreens with touchscreen functionality.
• An “information pole” with built in touch screen and a set of headphones. (small version of the information desk)
• Portable edition with PDA interface for GPS enabled PDA-phones for instant navigation service provided by Tomtom navigations.
• A text-based mobile phone version.

Assignment 1: The Dam Square

For my first Assignment I choose the Dam Square as the public space. It’s a very nice place that lies in the centre of Amsterdam. You will see all kinds of people from all over the world. As a tourist the first thing that you have to do is visit the Dam Square. A great hang out place, where you always feel happy. It’s 24 hours don’t sleep activity. There are always people! there is always a light, so you never feel lonely.

Another interesting thing is that in the middle of the shopping centre and around this square there is a lot of terraces. In the summer you can sit at a terrace with your friends or your lover. As you look around you will notice how different the peoples are. You will see and experience the most funny things.

I choose this square, because it’s a place in Amsterdam that I like very much. I come a lot with my boyfriend and friends in the summer time. This place give me a very free feelings and give me a lot of ideas for my poetry. I like to see the people from all over the world and I want to write a poetry about them. That is why I’m working at the airport Schiphol. And with Amsterdam it’s the same, you see peoples visit Amsterdam and leave Amsterdam, but there is always a big smile on their faces. When you see the big smile on their faces, you feel the sunshine in you.
